Sustainable Management of Central Appalachian Red Spruce

نویسندگان

چکیده

Red spruce (Picea rubens) was historically an important and dominant timber species in the central Appalachian mountain range. The tree is now found a small fraction of its original home Threatened endangered organisms such as Cheat Mountain Salamander (Plethodon nettingi) rely on red associated forests for survival. This review provides background history forest management region. A meta-analysis conducted recent literature (published 2000 or later) region to highlight key conservation concerns. In particular, health concerns related air pollution climatic stress also are addressed. Approaches examine impact environmental factors site productivity covered. sustainable options restoration

RED COLOURING OF THE UPPER RED FORMATION IN CENTRAL PART OF ITS BASIN, CENTRAL ZONE, IRAN

This study attempts to investigate the origin of red pigments, time of reddening, and processes responsible for red colouring of the Upper Miocene age Upper Red Formation, the most important clastic unit in central Iran. Mineralogical composition and textural properties of the studied sequences show that the Upper Red Formation sequences were not red when deposited, although some parts of red p...

Succession and disturbance in an endangered red spruce−Fraser fir forest in the southern Appalachian Mountains, North Carolina, USA

Red spruce−Fraser fir forests are geographically limited to high elevations in the Appalachian Mountains (USA) and are considered to be endangered in the USA. We investigated the successional status and radial growth patterns in the heavily disturbed red spruce Picea rubens Sarg. and Fraser fir Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir. forest of Roan Mountain, Tennessee and North Carolina. This study elucida...

Chemical climatology of high elevation spruce-fir forests in the southern Appalachian mountains.

The physical and chemical climatology of high elevation (> 1500 m) spruce-fir forests in the southern Appalachian mountains was studied by establishing a weather and atmospheric chemical observatory at Mt Mitchell State Park in North Carolina (35 degrees 44' 05" N, 82 degrees 17' 15"W). Data collected during the summer and autumn (May-October) of 1986, 1987, and 1988 are reported. All measureme...

Winter photosynthesis of red spruce from three Vermont seed sources.

We evaluated winter (January through March) carbon assimilation of red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) from three Vermont seed sources grown in a common garden in northwestern Vermont. Although CO(2) exchange rates were generally low, net photosynthetic rates increased during two prolonged thaws. Significant correlations between CO(2) exchange rates and multiday air temperature means supported our ...
